Leaders representing many sectors of the state agriculture industry have developed a statewide strategy known as the Vision for Illinois Agriculture.

The strategy has three major goals: for Illinois to rank among the nation’s top three states in both food manufacturing and in crop and animal production, and to lead the nation in bio-based products, technology and services.

In 2008, planning was initiated through the combined efforts of the Illinois Farm Bureau, the Illinois Department of Agriculture and the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences.

With the Vision for Illinois Agriculture marking five years in this effort, the Illinois Food and Agriculture Summit was designed to close phase 1 of the VIA initiative and launch a broader-based phase 2.

Two of the primary themes from the Summit were:

a) The need for business, government and academia to come together to develop a statewide plan for agriculture.
b) The opportunity for Chicago to position itself as the global leader in food and agriculture.
